Wax Aftercare Do's and Don'ts: Complete Post-Wax Skin Care Guide

What you do in the 24–48 hours after your wax determines how good your skin looks, how long results last, and whether you stay smooth and bump-free.

Why aftercare matters: the first 24 to 48 hours

Right after waxing, your skin is in a temporarily vulnerable state. Removing hair from the follicle leaves the follicle openings briefly open, and the surface of the skin is freshly exfoliated and more sensitive than usual. For roughly the first 24 to 48 hours, your skin is more reactive — more prone to irritation, more susceptible to bacteria, and more easily damaged by heat, friction, or sun.

The don'ts: what to avoid for 24–48 hours

Skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and intense sweaty workouts. Avoid swimming. Stay out of direct sun and tanning beds. Wear loose, breathable clothing. For Brazilian/bikini waxes, wait 24–48 hours before sex. Don't touch, scratch, or pick the area. Avoid aggressive exfoliation or strong actives (retinoids, acids). Skip heavy, fragranced products.

The do's: how to care for freshly waxed skin

Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water and pat dry gently. Soothe with pure aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free moisturizer if tender. Use sunscreen on exposed waxed areas after the first 24–48 hours. Hydrate your skin daily going forward.

Days three and beyond: preventing ingrown hairs

Exfoliate two to three times a week starting a few days after your wax. Moisturize daily. Don't pick at bumps or try to extract ingrowns. Don't shave between waxes. Rebook every 3–4 weeks to stay on a consistent cycle.
