Ingrown Hairs After Waxing: How to Prevent Them and Keep Skin Smooth

Ingrown hairs are one of the most common concerns after waxing — but they're largely preventable. Here's our expert guide to exfoliation, moisturizing, and aftercare that keeps skin smooth and bump-free between appointments.

Ingrown hairs are one of the most common concerns among waxing clients — and one of the most preventable. At Wax Me Too, our licensed estheticians have helped thousands of clients achieve smooth, ingrown-free skin through proper waxing technique and aftercare education. Here's your complete guide to preventing ingrown hairs.

Ingrown hair prevention tips after waxing

What Causes Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs occur when a hair grows back into the skin rather than up through the follicle. They're most common in areas where hair is coarse and curly — like the bikini area, underarms, and legs. Contributing factors include:

  • Dead skin cells blocking the hair follicle
  • Tight clothing that creates friction against freshly waxed skin
  • Dry skin that doesn't allow hair to break through the surface
  • Improper waxing technique (another reason to choose an experienced esthetician)

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing

  • Exfoliate regularly. Begin gentle exfoliation 48 hours after your wax and continue 2–3 times per week. This removes dead skin cells that can trap growing hairs.
  • Moisturize daily. Hydrated skin allows hair to grow through the surface more easily. Use a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic lotion on waxed areas daily.
  • Avoid heat. Skip hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours after waxing — heat can cause inflammation that contributes to ingrown hairs.
  • Don't shave between appointments. Shaving between waxing sessions disrupts the hair growth cycle and increases the risk of ingrown hairs.

Professional Waxing Reduces Ingrown Hair Risk

Proper waxing technique significantly reduces the risk of ingrown hairs compared to shaving. When hair is removed from the root (as in waxing), it grows back with a tapered tip that's less likely to curl back into the skin. Shaving creates a blunt cut that's more prone to ingrowth.
