An ingrown hair is a single hair that grows back into the skin — a mechanical problem. Folliculitis is inflammation or infection of the hair follicle, often involving bacteria, usually showing up as multiple acne-like bumps. Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are a shaving-related form of irritation caused by ingrown hairs.

Ingrown hairs

A strand that curves back into the skin or gets trapped just beneath the surface. Usually an individual bump, often with a single hair visible underneath, in a spot where you recently removed hair. Most resolve on their own within a week or two with gentle exfoliation, moisturizing, and a warm compress. Don't pick or dig it out.

Folliculitis

Clusters of small red or white pus-filled bumps around follicles — looks like acne. Caused by bacteria getting into damaged or irritated follicles. Mild cases clear up on their own within a week to ten days with warm compresses, antibacterial wash, and loose clothing. See a provider if it persists, spreads, or comes with fever.

Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae)

Groups of irritated bumps in a recently shaved area, especially with curly or coarse hair. The single most effective step is to stop shaving the area — which is why switching to waxing helps so many people.

For all three: be gentle, don't pick, keep the area clean, pause hair removal until healed. Ingrown hair: gentle exfoliation and moisturizing, warm compress, patience. Folliculitis: warm compresses, antibacterial wash, loose clothing. Razor bumps: stop shaving, consider waxing instead.
