How to Prepare for Your Wax: The Complete Before-Care Guide

The secret to a great wax starts before you even walk in the door. Here's everything you need to do — and avoid — in the days leading up to your appointment to ensure the smoothest, most complete wax possible.

The secret to a great waxing experience starts before you ever walk through our door. Proper preparation ensures the wax can grip hair effectively, reduces discomfort, and minimizes the risk of irritation. Here's Wax Me Too's complete before-care guide.

Waxing before care preparation guide

Hair Length: The Most Important Factor

For waxing to work effectively, your hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice. This is approximately 10 days of growth after shaving, or 3 to 4 weeks after waxing. If your hair is too short, the wax won't be able to grip it properly, leading to incomplete results.

If your hair is longer than ½ inch, don't worry — we can trim it for you. Just let your esthetician know when you arrive.

The Week Before Your Appointment

  • Stop shaving. Allow at least 10 days of growth from your last shave before your appointment.
  • Exfoliate gently. Light exfoliation 24–48 hours before your appointment helps remove dead skin cells and allows the wax to grip hair more effectively. Avoid harsh scrubs that could irritate the skin.
  • Moisturize daily. Well-hydrated skin waxes more easily and with less discomfort.
  • Avoid retinol and AHA/BHA products. These can thin the skin and increase sensitivity. Stop using them on the area to be waxed 3–5 days before your appointment.

The Day of Your Appointment

  • Shower and cleanse the area. Come to your appointment with clean skin, free of lotions, oils, and perfumes.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both can increase skin sensitivity.
  • Take an OTC pain reliever if desired. Some clients find that taking ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before their appointment reduces discomfort.
